The Two of Us

Brant Haflich

Brant is an up and coming environmental engineer and manages a research project that seeks to treat wastewater in a more sustainable way by using the good ol' sun and algae, while also creating biofuels along the way. He graduates in June just in time to begin our trip.
Brant manages a nineteen bedroom intentional community called "The Establishment" and is one of the  founders of San Luis Obispo's Bike Kitchen, a local non profit bicycle shop that acts as a community tool box and bike education center. He volunteers as a bike mechanic at least ten hours a week.

Bike Tours:
SLO to Sonoma and back again:  The first bike tour which I have now done a number of times.  Once on a road bike with a B.O.B., once without, once on my Karate Monkey with a trailer, and most recently on a tandem.  Its time to branch out
Arcata to SLO via PCH:  My second significant tour done with my brother in early March.  My toes have never been so cold
Missoula Montana to SLO:  Route via HWY 20 to Anacortes the PCH to SLO through Seatle and Portland
SLO to Ventura VIA PCH:  First trip with Lauren, what a strong woman.

Lauren Cook

Lauren is a classic liberal arts kid who is obsessed with language, history, and culture. She went to Cal Poly for her bachelors in English literature, did some grad school and now is ready to earn an education by-bicycle. She volunteers at the bike kitchen, writes, takes photographs, climbs rocks, and eventually  wants to dedicate her life work  to community health and development.

Bike Tours:
SLO to Ventura:  Upped her most miles in a single day from 30 to 90, and loaded to boot.
Sonoma to SLO:  Stoked the tandem, on board photographer, excellent leaner and put up with Brant through some incredibly uncomfortable seats.
Denver, CO to Washington, D.C. to Belfast, Maine and back down to Boston: Cross Country trip summer  2012
South East Asia: currently making a loop around Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia

Two of Us

We believe that our drastically different skill sets will be the perfect tool box
 for our education-by-bicycle trip.
